Day 1 of 30: Pet Names
I've always believed that a pet name or an endearment should come naturally. They should be something that slips over your shoulders like a silk nightgown, soft, flattering, and just for you.
Maybe that's why I've never found one that I liked.
Shouldn't anything my sweetheart calls me fit that description? He loves me, so all names for me are laced with love, right?
After a while they feel like flat soda. Still sweet, but the bite has gone out of it.
Your pet name should be only yours. Not something your children say forty times a day. Not an endearment you can use for the dog. Especially not something your parents have called you.
This is so specific that the only practical way to get one is to pick it out yourself.
"But that's not how it's supposed to work!" The romantic teenager in me whines.
However, as woman twice her age, I no longer let my inner teen have any say. I've found that what I find romantic, moving, or sweet, entirely depends on if I decide it is so.
So, I'm going pet name shopping and this time I'll try it on.
